 | Ninian was opened as a retail store in 2003 by friends Joanna Hunter and Donna Smith to provide an outlet for local designers as well as other design led products that are carefully sourced from throughout the U.K. In early 2008 Donna decided to move on to pastures new and Joanna has taken on the challenge of Ninian as a sole traded, with a fantastic team behind her. Shona and Diane, who both have a background and interest in art and design, as well as Marianne the Saturday girl, are working with Joanna to create a fresh and vibrant new look for Ninian.
Joanna and her team design new collections throughout the year, under Ninian and Joanna Hunter Knitwear (JHK) as well as Pink Fish Designs (Shona's company) to tie in with the changes in the Shetland seasons as well as changes in trends globally.
They have launched the on-line Ninian store to try to keep up with the demand of visitors who want to purchase some of there unique products once they've returned home. Some of the most popular lines which we carry include Amy Christie, Jamieson & Smith - Shetland Wool Brokers, Aurora Orkney Jewellery, Hume Sweet Hume, Sheila Fleet Jewellery, PhatSheep, Donna Smith Designs and of course Joanna Hunter Knitwear and Pink Fish Designs. If you would like something which you've seen in the shop and it's not in our on-line store feel free to contact us and we'll try to help.
Ninian is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5.30pm and is open on occasional Sundays throughout the summer. Private openings are available on request.

Joanna Hunter-GairJoanna has always had a keen interest in textiles since she was first introduced to Fair Isle knitting by her grandmother as a young child. As a teenager she began to appreciate the amazing pattern designs and skill which Shetlanders used to create these garments but could see that if the younger generations were going to continue the tradition of wearing locally produced garments they needed to be modernised. Joanna studied design, manufacture and marketing of Shetland Knitwear at the Shetland College and in 1999 she went on to set up Joanna Hunter Knitwear.
Joanna researches old Fair Isle patterns and designs as well as following global fashion trends to create a unique collection of contemporary Shetland Knitwear, mainly made from Shetland wool, lambswool and cotton.
